Washington, D.C. — Today is election day. Today we, and millions of Americans across the nation, will head to the polls to choose our elected representatives and participate in direct democracy through ballot referendums.

The stakes are high. Over the past two years, we’ve seen an anti-democracy movement in this country gain momentum. This movement has sought to deny election results, to make it harder to vote, to undermine fair elections, and to exclude millions, including minoritized populations, from the political process. We have also seen the bold commitment of people and communities across the nation pushing back against those who seek to destroy our country’s highest ideals, undeterred by the extreme movement aiming to write democracy’s last chapter.

We are grateful to all those today and in the generations before us who have worked to secure the right to vote. We condemn all intimidation tactics and any and all attempts to discourage people from voting or to spread misinformation. If you encounter any problems at the polls, contact the nonpartisan Election Protection hotline: 866-OUR-VOTE.

The majority of the American people believe in the promise and potential of democracy. On election day and every day thereafter, we will do our part in advancing democracy and ensuring that the government works for all people
