On July 19, 2024, Democracy Forward filed an amicus brief on behalf of the Greater New Orleans Interfaith Climate Coalition, arguing that DOI’s offshore oil and gas leasing program will contribute to climate change, cause irreversible damage to coastal ecosystems, and increase pollution levels, all while disproportionately affecting already disadvantaged communities. The case is before the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
DOI is legally required to consider the environmental and social impacts of such programs, including on communities that have historically been victims of environmental degradation.
At stake is not only the protection of the Gulf Coast’s fragile ecosystems but also the health, livelihoods, and cultural heritage of the people who call this region home.
This case, now consolidated with Healthy Gulf v. Department of Interior, is part of a set of challenges from oil and gas companies that have argued that the offshore drilling program is essential for energy production and economic stability even though it causes environmental damage.
Democracy Forward’s client, the Greater New Orleans Interfaith Climate Coalition, in this case, advocates for a more just and equitable approach to energy policy—one that prioritizes the well-being and voices of people.
