Wolfson is Latest Addition to Democracy Forward’s Growing Team of Lawyers, as Threats to the American People and Rule of Law Escalate
Washington, D.C. – Prominent Supreme Court and appellate advocate Paul R.Q. Wolfson has joined Democracy Forward as a Senior Legal Advisor, the organization announced today. Paul, who previously co-chaired the Supreme Court and Appellate Practice at WilmerHale, most recently served as Deputy Associate Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice. His addition strengthens the deep bench of experienced litigators and advocates that have joined Democracy Forward, as threats to the American people and our democracy have intensified.
“We could not be more grateful that Paul will be joining our team at such a consequential time for people and communities across our nation. Paul’s deep expertise in district court and appellate litigation, as well as his commitment to our Constitution, will be critical as our team continues to ensure that unlawful and harmful executive actions are met with swift legal challenges,” said Skye Perryman, President and CEO of Democracy Forward. “Paul has shown a commitment over the course of his career to mentoring and training new generations of lawyers – something that is especially needed at this time when the legal profession is playing a pivotal role in the protection of the American people and our democracy.”
As Deputy Associate Attorney General, Paul supervised the litigation of the Civil Division and provided strategic advice to Department leaders and dozens of federal agencies. Prior to that post, for almost 20 years he was a partner and co-chair of Appellate and Supreme Court Litigation at WilmerHale and has experience in a wide array of subject areas, as well as extensive pro bono commitments. He also served for eight years in DOJ’s Office of the Solicitor General, where he appeared regularly before the U.S. Supreme Court, earning the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award for “exemplary representation of the United States before the Supreme Court.”
Earlier in his career, Paul was a lawyer for Public Citizen Litigation Group. He has been active in a range of activities to promote the rule of law and the legal profession, including holding leadership and committee positions in the American Bar Association, the DC Board of Professional Responsibility, and the Edward Coke Appellate Inn of Court. He was a founding member of the LGBT Association of DC, which was one of the nation’s first LGBTQ bar associations. Paul clerked for Supreme Court Justice Byron White and Judge Phyllis Kravitch of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
Democracy Forward, which was founded in 2017, has emerged as a critical bulwark for the American people against the unconstitutional actions the new administration has taken since inauguration, while also playing important roles in state and local communities. The organization has been scaling its operations since 2021, and recently welcomed a range of new team members as the demand for its work has grown. Today’s announcement follows recent Democracy Forward announcements spotlighting the addition of several former top Justice Department officials, former Justice Department trial and appellate attorneys, and former Consumer Financial Protection Bureau officials.
