POLITICO WEEKLY SHIFT: DOGE critics seek docs on use of AI

A group that has emerged as one of the biggest thorns in the side of the Trump administration is submitting public records requests today to more than a half-dozen federal agencies seeking information about the use of artificial intelligence to make personnel decisions.

“The American people deserve to know what is going on – including if and how artificial intelligence is being used to reshape the departments and agencies people rely on daily,” Perryman said.

NEW YORK TIMES: Federal Judges Are Ordering Trump to Slow Down. Will He Listen?

“The court process is forcing a lot of public exposure as to what the administration is actually doing,” said Skye Perryman, the chief executive of Democracy Forward, which has won 12 court orders stemming from more than two dozen legal actions it has filed.

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE: Trump is bulldozing over Congress. Why aren’t lawmakers taking him to court?

The Trump administration faces more than 90 lawsuits over its attempts to revoke birthright citizenship, bend sanctuary states and religious institutions to its deportation agenda, dismiss tens of thousands of federal workers, cancel trillions in congressionally approved spending and unleash the so-called Department of Government Oversight, or DOGE, on actual federal departments.

Thus far, the legal challenges have come from individuals, labor unions, blue states and progressive organizations like Democracy Forward, which has filed more lawsuits than any single state or organization, said CEO Skye Perryman.

The National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education, alongside several other nonprofit groups and the mayor of Baltimore, sued Trump to block the order from going into effect, arguing that he was “seizing” Congress’ power of the purse by ordering a halt to the funding, and that his failure to define DEI gave the attorney general “carte blanche authority to implement the order discriminatorily.”

U.S. District Judge Loren AliKhan in Washington, D.C., issued a preliminary injunction requested by groups representing thousands of nonprofits and small businesses. Six fired federal employees must be rehired at least through April 10, according to the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB), the independent federal agency that hears employee complaints against the government.

The Office of Special Counsel took up the case of the six fired employees after receiving a complaint, brought on their behalf by the legal advocacy group Democracy Forward and the Alden Law Group.

CNN: Federal workers turn to little-known ‘merit board’ as they try to avoid Trump’s mass layoffs

The board on Tuesday temporarily reinstated the six employees that Trump appointees tried to fire, handing activists an initial victory as they try to save the jobs of thousands of others.

“Now that we have this determination, we’re going to be requesting broader relief,” said Skye Perryman, president of Democracy Forward, a liberal-leaning nonprofit at the forefront of these and other legal challenges. “The individuals we represent are representative of so many individuals in these federal agencies who were terminated improperly without proper cause.”
