NBC News: First to NBC News: Trump’s federal force reduction effort faces new legal challenge
More than a dozen labor unions, nonprofit groups and cities and counties have joined a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s sweeping push to shrink the federal government.
The lawsuit, filed today, argues that Trump’s executive order establishing the Department of Government Efficiency violates the separation of powers under the Constitution.
The coalition of plaintiffs was organized by Democracy Forward, a progressive legal organization that has led various legal challenges to Trump’s agenda.
“The nonpartisan federal workforce — which works for all Americans — has been at the mercy of the lawlessness of the Trump-Musk agenda for nearly 100 days,” said Skye Perryman, the president and CEO of Democracy Forward. “The impact of the reckless decisions that have been made in an attempt to unlawfully reorganize the federal government without Congress and is being felt in communities across our nation, in red states and blue states.”
Washington Post: Unions, local governments sue to block Trump administration’s workforce cuts
A coalition of labor unions, local governments and nonprofits sued the Trump administration in federal court Monday evening, seeking to block the U.S. DOGE Service’s federal workforce cuts because they lack approval from Congress.
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, argued that the administration’s “reduction in force” plans and reorganization of the federal government violate the Constitution’s separation of powers.
The coalition deemed the lawsuit “the largest and most significant challenge to Trump’s authority to remake the government” without Congress’s approval.
NPR: New lawsuit argues Trump and DOGE’s government overhaul is unconstitutional
A coalition of labor unions, nonprofits and local governments including Chicago, Baltimore and Harris County, Texas, has mounted the broadest legal challenge yet to President Trump’s massive overhaul of the federal government.
In a lawsuit filed late Monday, the plaintiffs charge that actions taken by the president, Elon Musk, and the heads of nearly two dozen federal agencies to dramatically downsize the federal workforce violate the Constitution because Congress has not authorized them.
Bloomberg: Trump Sued by Labor Unions Over Workforce Reduction Efforts
President Donald Trump is exceeding his constitutional authority by ordering mass workforce reductions across federal agencies, a coalition of labor unions and local US governments alleged in a new lawsuit Monday.
Some of the plaintiffs, including the American Federation of Government Employees, have garnered victories against the Trump administration in the Northern District of California. AFGE nabbed a win against the US Office of Personnel Management in March after Judge William Alsup ordered the administration to rehire thousands of the government’s newest employees who were terminated in February.
Altshuler Berzon LLP, Democracy Forward Foundation, Protect Democracy Project, State Democracy Defenders Fund, AFGE’s in-house counsel, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees in-house counsel, Service Employees International Union’s in-house counsel, the Office of the City Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco, Santa Clara County’s Office of County Counsel, the Office of King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion, Public Rights Project, Harris County Attorney’s Office, Corporation Counsel of the City of Chicago, and the Baltimore City Department of Law represent the plaintiffs.
