Washington, D.C. Today, the Supreme Court issued its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturning Roe v. Wade and eliminating the constitutional right to an abortion.

In response to today’s ruling, Democracy Forward President & CEO Skye Perryman issued the following statement:

“Today, the majority of the Supreme Court dealt a devastating blow to our democracy in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. With it, they’ve rolled back the fundamental rights of millions of Americans, gutting access to abortion and putting the health and lives of people in danger, while undermining their full equality under the law. The right to be recognized as an equal person under the law and to make decisions about the most intimate matters in one’s life is fundamental to a free society and to a democracy.

This is not the first time in the nation’s history that the Supreme Court has dealt a blow to democracy, yet today’s decision underscores that these setbacks are not merely a relic of the past. The Court’s majority has failed to reliably protect the rights of the American people. Turning the tide in the days ahead will require all of us.

Last month, after the Court’s opinion leaked, we filed a lawsuit challenging an abortion ban using arguments that do not rely on Roe v. Wade.  This strategy has already won results. Our team will continue to work across the full range of issues that matter to people and communities to secure the promise of democracy for all Americans.”
