Washington, DC – In response to the fourth anniversary of the January 6, 2021 attack on our nation’s Capitol, Democracy Forward CEO and President Skye Perryman issued the following statement:

“Like Americans across the country, we at Democracy Forward are reflecting on the events of January 6, 2021 and mourning the lives lost. We watched, horrified, as a violent mob stormed the Capitol, the culmination of a months-long attempt by then President Trump and his allies to overturn the results of an election he knew he rightfully lost. This day is a reminder that our democracy is fragile and cannot be taken for granted.

“Following the insurrection in 2021, the United States was added to the global list of backsliding democracies and has remained on this list ever since.  Later this month, President-elect Trump will take office. Yet, he and his allies continue to dispute the election results from 2020, accepting results only when they are victorious.

“Our democracy and the future prosperity of our nation is at a critical juncture. While we sincerely hope the incoming Administration will prioritize the American people and the common good, the President-elect has indicated his intention to nominate architects and authors of Project 2025 to key positions in our government, a move that will accelerate harmful extremism that the American people of all ideological backgrounds reject. The dangerous policies in Project 2025 are a threat to the American people, to our Constitution, and to our democracy as a whole.

“Our democracy is only as strong as the people willing to defend and sustain it. Along with millions of Americans across the country, that is what Democracy Forward is prepared to do in the days and years ahead.”
