Report highlights critical work and impact in 38+ states, in courts across the country, and in opposition to Project 2025, as broad and diverse coalitions across the nation join together to advance freedom and democracy
Washington, D.C. – Amidst growing public awareness regarding extreme and harmful proposals in Project 2025, Democracy Forward, a leading pro-democracy legal organization, released its Midyear Impact Report: Freedom on the Brink and the Path Forward. The report highlights anti-democratic threats currently facing people and communities across the nation and describes the way in which hundreds of communities and organizations have worked together to counter them.
“Our democracy is only as strong as the movement to keep it. From countering restrictions and bans on reproductive rights, to combatting censorship, to seeking to preserve and advance civil rights for all, this year we have seen We, The People commit to the generationally-defining work to strengthen our democracy and oppose harmful extremism being driven by far-right groups and political actors,” said Skye Perryman, President and CEO of Democracy Forward. “The fight for democracy is the fight for people. With a growing team of lawyers, researchers, policy experts, and strategic communicators, Democracy Forward is committed to hard fights against long odds. Our report highlights Democracy Forward’s work and impact – from school boards to the U.S. Supreme Court – and charts the path forward to protecting our freedoms and advancing our future.
Democracy Forward provides legal representation and strategic counsel to people who make up the fabric of our nation: workers, parents, teachers, young people, researchers, voters, business owners, doctors and health care professionals, artists, authors, creators, caregivers, immigrants, faith communities, and many more. The report features the organization’s work with these communities to advance social progress and create a bold and vibrant democracy for all people, including efforts to fight for access to affordable health care, and to defend workers’ rights, civil rights, and our nation’s civil service workers.
Founded in the wake of the 2016 election, Democracy Forward filed 100+ cases against the Trump administration, stopping scores of harmful and unlawful policies from being implemented. Since then, Democracy Forward has expanded the scope and reach of its work to address anti-democratic activity to counter the work of far-right legal organizations who are seeking to reverse our nation’s progress. It has taken more than 700+ actions and works alongside more than 400+ clients and partners.
“Democracy Forward is building a bulwark against extremism and charting a path forward toward a bold and vibrant democracy for all, and we are grateful for the commitment of the many groups and neighbors cataloged in this report who are working alongside us with determination to create an America as good as its promise,” added Perryman.
