Leading Pro-Democracy Groups Investigating So-Called “Task Force to Eradicate Anti-Christian Bias”
Washington, D.C. – Democracy Forward and Interfaith Alliance, a nationwide network of people of diverse faiths who challenge Christian nationalism and religious extremism, today submitted a series of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests relating to the so-called “Task Force to Eradicate Anti-Christian Bias,” created via executive order on February 6. The Task Force was announced as part of a February 6, 2025, executive order titled “Eradicating Anti-Christian Bias.”
The Task Force was charged with reviewing all federal departments and agencies for “anti-Christian bias” and recommending actions for the President to help him “rectify past injustices of anti-Christian conduct.” The Task Force was asked to submit reports after 120 days, after a year, and upon the task force’s dissolution in two years. The FOIA requests submitted today seek more information about the Task Force, as well as the Trump administration’s implementation of the executive order.
There has been no evidence of widespread anti-Christian bias in the United States and experts have found that perpetuating this myth is deeply offensive to the actual persecution of Christians around the world.
“Tolerance is not antithetical to faith, and using our government to imply otherwise is a dangerous affront to true religious liberty. Democracy Forward is proud to work with the Interfaith Alliance to investigate this Task Force, increase this administration’s accountability, and protect our freedom of religion,” said Steven Bressler, Senior Legal Advisor at Democracy Forward.
“Driven by our longstanding commitment to our nation’s promise of religious freedom for all, Interfaith Alliance is deeply concerned about government efforts to falsely suggest that American Christians face a ‘crisis of persecution,’ the manufacturing of a threat of Christian persecution in the United States,” said Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush, President & CEO of the Interfaith Alliance Foundation. “We fear that this Task Force will in fact persecute those, including Christians, who don’t align with a particular religious agenda – and circumvent anti-discrimination laws under the guise of protecting religious freedom. The Task Force convened by Attorney General Bondi has dangerous potential to enshrine preferential treatment for a narrow set of right-wing Christian nationalists. Nothing could be more harmful to true religious freedom in our democracy.”
Interfaith Alliance organized a letter from prominent Christian leaders who denounced the creation of The Task Force. They referenced how the administration itself may now serve as the most prominent source of anti-Christian bias in the United States today. “We have already seen that any Christian who steps out of line with this administration will be targeted, which greatly diminishes how we can follow Christ,” the letter states.
The letters requesting records relating to the meetings and work of the Task Force are here.
