Washington, D.C. – Students across the country will have clearer protections from sex discrimination including harassment, thanks to additional guidance regarding Title IX, announced today by the Biden administration’s Department of Education.

The administration’s clarification of the protections provided by Title IX were applauded by gender justice, LGBTQ+ and survivors’ rights advocates, including Skye Perryman, the President and CEO of Democracy Forward.

“For more than a half-century, Title IX has been an important tool in making education more accessible and in addressing  sex discrimination that is all too common in our schools. The new protections from the Biden administration are a meaningful step toward ensuring more effective protections for everyone, including student survivors of sexual harassment, pregnant and parenting students, and LGBTQI+ students,” said Skye Perryman, President and CEO of Democracy Forward. “While these clarifications strengthen the promise of Title IX, significant work remains to be done to ensure that there are strong protections for student athletes – especially against a backdrop of attacks on transgender, nonbinary, and intersex people by far-right extremists. It is critical that all people, including students pursuing their education,  can thrive, free from discrimination and harassment.”
