Sonia Weil

Sonia Weil is a Senior Attorney, Democracy 2025, at Democracy Forward.

Sonia has more than a decade of legal experience in the public sector, much of which has been spent expanding access to elections and strengthening democratic systems. Prior to joining Democracy Forward, Sonia was a Policy Counsel at Informing Democracy, where she researched and analyzed election processes in key states and developed accessible resources for pro-democracy partners. Previously, she served as Senior Legislative Counsel at the Council of the District of Columbia, where she led legislation on voting rights, election administration, campaign finance, and criminal justice reform. During her tenure there, she was responsible for bills that implemented a public financing system for local campaigns, restored the right to vote to D.C. residents incarcerated for felony convictions, provided paid leave to vote, expanded automatic voter registration, restricted “pay-to-play” government contracting, and instituted mail-in voting, among others. Sonia began her legal career as a trial attorney at the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia.

Sonia graduated from the George Washington University Law School with honors and received a B.A. with honors from the University of Michigan. She is a member of the D.C. and Maryland bars. A native Washingtonian, Sonia lives in D.C. with her family.
