Javier Guzman is the Legal Director for Democracy Forward. Prior to joining Democracy Forward, Javier spent nearly 20 years with the Department of Justice, serving as a trial attorney, Assistant U.S. Attorney, supervisor, and, most recently, as Deputy Associate Attorney General. Javier has directly litigated and overseen DOJ cases in a wide range of substantive areas including regulatory litigation, civil rights enforcement and defense, environmental law, information transparency, and immigration law. Prior to his DOJ tenure, Javier worked at a major Washington, DC law firm, focusing on complex civil litigation.
Javier grew up in New Orleans and holds a J.D. from Tulane Law School, where he graduated as a member of the Order of the Coif, and a Bachelor’s of Science in Economics with a Minor in History from Louisiana State University.
