Washington, D.C. – Following the announcement that President Trump has fired U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem, Democracy Forward President and CEO Skye Perryman issued the following statement:
“Kristi Noem’s time leading the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will be remembered for lawlessness, cruelty, and a relentless effort to weaponize the federal government against people in this country, including immigrants. Her removal from leading DHS, which comes two days after a federal court issued an order enabling our team and co-counsel to make her appear for deposition, does not erase the damage done during her tenure. If the president is serious about moving forward, his administration must immediately reverse the policies that undermined due process, civil rights and constitutional rights, and terrorized people across America. Until then, Democracy Forward will keep doing what we have done throughout Noem’s tenure: take the administration to court and fight to protect people and the rule of law.”
Democracy Forward has served as a critical bulwark against the unconstitutional actions of the Trump-Vance administration, filing more than 400 legal actions and securing more than 100 victories (and counting) that directly protect people in America from harmful policies. Democracy Forward litigates cases at all levels, from federal district courts to the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as in state and local courts across the nation, fighting to protect people and communities from the lawlessness of this administration. Among the many cases challenging Secretary Noem’s abuses of power are those to protect people seeking refuge, the abuse of immigration enforcement inside schools and houses of worship, and the sabotaging of ways to ensure oversight and accountability, including the shuttering of DHS internal watchdog offices as well as blocking access to members of Congress for doing the same.
