Washington, D.C. — At the start of Women’s History Month, Democracy Forward President and CEO Skye Perryman today called upon people to celebrate and remember the many women who have helped advance equality, justice, and opportunity in our nation, and to commit to continuing the fight:
“From the well known heroines to the unsung women, American history is marked by the contributions of countless women who have sought to bring about democracy for all, stewarded our nation’s resources, served our nation in the military and civil service, and made everyday contributions to our communities that have strengthened us all. From the battlefields of the American Revolution to the board rooms of America today, women are an indispensable part of our collective story. But while much progress has been made, much work remains to ensure equal protection, equal opportunity, and equal pay for women in America.
“This moment requires resilience and resistance. We must never give up on building a nation that can hold all of us and where all of us can thrive. Our greatest wish at Democracy Forward is that our work on behalf of and commitment to the American people incubates hope and reminds people to never give up. We will continue to use all tools our democracy provides to work for equality, promote and advance the rights of women and girls, and preserve our nation’s rich history, that includes women’s history.”
Democracy Forward has served as a critical bulwark against the unconstitutional actions of the Trump-Vance administration, filing more than 400 legal actions and securing more than 100 victories (and counting) that directly protect Americans from harmful policies since January 2025. Democracy Forward litigates cases at all levels from federal district courts to the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as in state and local courts across the nation, fighting to protect people and communities from the lawlessness of this administration.
Among Democracy Forward’s ongoing legal efforts are multiple cases that challenge the ways in which the Trump-Vance administration continues to block paths towards progress for women in America. From attacking Title IX, the Violence Against Women Act, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, and protections for transgender workers, women and youth, to undermining the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, U.S. Department of Labor’s Women’s Bureau, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, and several programs at the Pentagon, this administration seeks to deny women their right to fully participate in our society.
In particular, this administration’s attack on reproductive health access for all has continued, weakening protections for data privacy, commencing a politically motivated attack on mifepristone – despite its use by over 7 million women over a quarter century – and eliminating abortion access for our nation’s veterans. More than three years after the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs, extremists and politicians continue to seek to ban abortion entirely, with more than 40 states having some type of abortion ban in effect – several banning abortion entirely. Abortion access is entirely locked out of the southern United States, and women across the country are forced to travel hundreds of thousands of miles to receive medically-necessary care.
The organization has received national recognition for its work on behalf of women and girls, including by the publisher of Ms. Magazine – the Feminist Majority Foundation – which recently named Democracy Forward and Perryman as the 2025 Resister-In-Law at their Global Women’s Rights Award Ceremony. Other recognition of Democracy Forward and its leaders for its commitment to the rights of women and girls include the Sarah S. Brown Award from Power to Decide, the Sissy Farenthold Social Justice Award, and being designated a Human Rights Hero by the American Bar Association’s Human Rights Magazine for the organization’s defense of the rule of law and specific defense of a program for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
