Democracy Forward invoked the little-known Information Quality Act (“IQA”) to file a petition with the Department of Treasury (“Treasury”) demanding the agency correct unreliable and misleading statements regarding the impact of President Trump’s tax proposal on the American people.

The petition argues that the Trump Administration violated the IQA by misleadingly asserting that the proposed tax plan would give the average American household a “$4,000–9,000” raise and that “70 Percent” of the benefits of the proposed corporate tax cuts would go to workers. Treasury’s own analysis and independent experts refuted the claims.

Under the IQA, federal agencies must provide accurate, reliable, and unbiased information to the public. Despite the critical importance to the ongoing Federal tax debate, the Treasury has failed to correct its flawed statistics.

Per IQA guidelines, Treasury has 60 days to comply with the request for correction.
