Nitin Shah is Senior Counsel at Democracy Forward. Nitin previously served as Chief of Staff and Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division in the U.S. Department of Justice, where he supervised high-profile litigation defending Obama Administration policies, while also assisting in the management of the Justice Department’s largest litigating component and coordinating the division’s response to congressional oversight and related inquiries. Prior to that, he was an attorney in the Office of Legal Counsel, where he provided legal advice to the White House and Executive Branch agencies. In that capacity, he received the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award for legal advice provided during the 2013 federal government shutdown. At DOJ, Nitin also served as a litigator defending against statutory and constitutional challenges to government policies in federal district courts and in the courts of appeals.

Nitin clerked for Judge Judith W. Rogers of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and for Judge T.S. Ellis III of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law, and completed his undergraduate studies at Harvard College.
